SWIMMING

Maccabi goes well at Metsea

CONSIDERING Maccabi NSW Swimming Club entered a relatively young squad into last week’s 2022 Metsea (Metro South East Sydney) Summer Swimming Championships, it achieved some terrific results, and plenty of PBs by its swimmers.

Standout performers were Awen Hiroti (11 girls’ 50 freestyle) and Nicholas Fasol (10 boys’ 50 freestyle), who both won bronze medals in their events.

Hiroti also qualified for next month’s Junior Metropolitan Championships in three events (50 free, 50 breaststroke, and 50 backstroke).

Fasol qualified for the 50 and 100 free, and the 50 butterfly and backstroke.

The team’s toughest trainer, Samuel Mervis, missed out on medals in his 13 boys’ events at the Metsea championships, but still posted very impressive PB times in the 50 free and butterfly, and the 100 free.

MACCABI TRIATHLON

Tight finish at Heffron

GOOD conditions bright and early on Sunday, October 16 saw a solid turnout of 14 compete in Maccabi’s October triathlon at Heffron pool and reserve, while two competitors completed an aquathon.

Roy Cohen was the quickest in the opening swim leg (13 minutes and 19 seconds), with Brett Yudelman close behind, and a trio of athletes only a minute further behind, including Alan Kaplan, Tim Lindop and Norman Abel.

Craig Pager didn’t let being two minutes behind the pack worry him at the start of the bike leg – his strongest discipline.

Pager’s impressive cycling time of 31 minutes and 8 seconds made a huge impact, bringing him back into the lead group halfway through his ride.

Although Lindop was quickest in the run (20 minutes and 8 seconds), Pager’s running time of 21:16 proved just good enough to earn him overall victory.

Pager’s total time was 1:10.51, runner-up Lindop was next in 1:11.01, followed by Kaplan in 1:12.59.

The ever-improving Guy Miller came fourth (1:15.52), and Roy Cohen fifth (1:18.50).

Vanessa Levy-Mesman was the women’s winner.

Benjamin Narcyz and Brett Yudelman opted to do a swim and cycle race, with the former clocking 53:33 to win by 1 minute and 15 seconds, thanks to a strong bike ride, after trailing in the swim.

The next Maccabi triathlon at Heffron will be on Sunday, December 4.

SCHOOL ATHLETICS

Speedy Madison wins silver

MORIAH College’s Madison Cohen won silver in the 9 girls’ 100m event at last week’s NSW Primary Schools Athletics Championships, representing her school and CIS.

After winning her heat, and a semi-final, the speedy youngster sealed second place in the final, edged by just 0.3 of a second by Terry Hills Public School’s Havana Gray.

Cohen would have qualified for the nationals in November, if it weren’t for her 10th birthday being in early January 2023, rather than before the end of this year.

On the plus side, she has an extra year to prepare.

FUTSAL

Goals galore in NSW Premier League

THERE was no shortage of goals in round 7 of the 2022 NSW Futsal Premier League open men’s competition last Saturday night at Valentine Sports Park.

In the match of the round, Eastern Suburbs Hakoah Futsal Club outlasted UTS Northside 4-3 in a thriller, to move up to fifth spot on the ladder at the competition’s halfway mark.

Gilad Swartz (two goals), Noah Feilich (one) and Jake Lees all scored for Hakoah.

Feilich, who is the team’s goalkeeper, scored moments after saving a shot, when he spotted an open goal and decided to take a shot himself.

UTS Northside scored its third goal in the 48th minute, but Hakoah’s defence held strong in the final minutes.

And in Mascot Vipers’ 3-4 loss to first-placed Enfield Allstars, Jewish player and Futsalroos squad member Ethan De Melo scored a goal for the Vipers.

This Saturday’s round will be a double-header for all teams, and one of the matches will be Hakoah versus the Vipers.

MIXED NETBALL

Young adult Maccabi night

THE Maccabi Young Adult Social Mixed Netball group continues to bring people together through sport, good times, and good vibes.

Its latest evening event on October 19 at the Moore Park courts drew good numbers for a round-robin style netball competition, with a generous side serving of music, a barbecue dinner, sweets and prizes.

For the record, Daniel Shein’s team was the overall winner.

A donation of $10 from every player’s entry fee was made to the Maccabi NSW All Abilities Program.
