Newly crowned Maccabi Australia Outstanding Sportsman of the Year, Ethan De Melo (pictured), was rewarded for consistently good form for Australia, by coach Miles Downie, by getting picked to play in all of the Futsalroos’ 2024 AFC Asian Futsal Cup in Bangkok in the second half of April.

It was the first time Australia had qualified for the tournament since 2016, and although bowing out in the group stage, they gained invaluable experience.

De Melo set up the Aussies’ first goal in a 2-3 opening game loss to Uzbekistan. He scored a cracking long range goal in a 2-4 loss to Saudi Arabia, and also used his body to save a certain goal, and also played well in a 2-6 loss to Iraq – a game in which the Aussies led 2-1 at half-time. Iran won the championship, defeating hosts Thailand 4-1 in the final.
