“I’m extremely grateful to those in the Jewish community who gave me their trust in the form of their vote,” Zoe Daniel told The AJN in the wake of her win in Goldstein.

“That reflects their understanding of who I am as a person rather than focusing on manipulated information that was put about during the campaign,” she added.

The first non-Liberal member to be chosen to represent the electorate said she is “really looking forward to directly engaging with the Jewish community and learning more and being a good representative for the community”.

“And that goes for people who voted for me or who didn’t,” she added.

Daniel has however confirmed that her position on the “Do Better on Palestine” open letter, which she signed last year and has been urged to distance herself from, is unchanged and her signature will remain.

Daniel said her first move as an MP will be dependent on the numbers.

“If Labor has a clear majority, that’s a different dynamic to it not,” she said.

But she told The AJN, “I campaigned on a very clear platform of climate prosperity, integrity and equality, so I will go forward and advocate on those issues.

“I think there is pressure to be brought to bear on Labor in regard to climate policy, and I think that in many ways, they deliberately undercut their potential target, because climate policy has been weaponised for so long, so they didn’t want that to happen during the election.”

She elaborated, “There’s a case for more ambitious targets, even if they don’t publicly state a new number, I think there’s a case for aiming to be more ambitious and seeing where that lands.”

The mother of two said she is “excited and optimistic” about what she can achieve, adding that she is “really looking forward to getting stuck into the issues that I campaigned on”.
