Exciting event at the Burger Centre

"At the heart of this project is a safe space within which the Burger Centre seniors are heard, and audiences can bear witness to their extraordinary lives," said Goldstein.

The Burger Centre has an exciting event coming up, which champions greater inclusivity and expands its Positive Ageing Wellness Program.

The internationally acclaimed theatre project This is Who I Am is a long-term project created by award-winning theatre maker and Randwick resident Jeremy Goldstein. Originally commissioned by British Council Singapore with a mission to platform underrepresented voices and raise awareness around unconscious bias, this first Sydney edition for the Burger Centre in Randwick fosters a deeper understanding and shifts perceptions around ageing positive.

This unique artistic platform offers a meaningful opportunity for the Burger Centre seniors to tell stories from their lived experience to the people who matter to them.

The stories will be told through a series of autobiographical monologues and photo portraits by Sydney-based photographer Cassandra Hannagan. These are real-life stories of struggles and achievements which might otherwise go untold or unacknowledged.

From the rise of fascism in Europe and the 1936 Battle of Cable Street, to astonishing first-hand accounts from Holocaust survivors and stories of migration and the 1967 Six-Day War, the Burger Centre seniors aged 72 to 98 speak the truth of their momentous lives, and in doing so, invite us all to question who we are, how we are seen and how we see others.

“At the heart of this project is a safe space within which the Burger Centre seniors are heard, and audiences can bear witness to their extraordinary lives,” said Goldstein.

“Overall, we’re telling one hundred years of living social history, so that’s an empowering learning experience of reflection which I hope will bring new perspectives and spark meaningful conversation and engagement to what I know to be a forward-thinking, progressive and empathetic caring community.”

Executive manager of the Burger Centre Christina Caddy-Gold is excited to have the opportunity to engage with an artist of Goldstein’s calibre.

“Working as we do in a non-art specific context, the project will allow us to expand our Positive Ageing Wellness Program in new and exciting ways and help bring new perspectives to our work, community, and the sector overall,” she said.

This is Who I Am takes place at the Burger Centre in Randwick on July 16 from 5pm. To book visit trybooking.com/1071970
