Jewmos, with the support of NewGen Families, Tammuz Family, Kehilat Nitzan and the Australian Jewish Fertility Network (AJFN), will host a free Rainbow Families brunch this Sunday, August 9 at 10am, exploring Jewish LGBTQ+ parenting journeys.

Family, raising the next generation and passing on tradition have always been central to Jewish life. Today, a growing number of LGBTQ+ Jews are pursuing that same dream.

For many, the question is no longer whether they want children, but how to build a family of their own. That question will be at the heart of the event.

The morning will bring together medical, legal and fertility experts alongside Jewish parents who have already navigated these journeys, exploring IVF, Australian and international surrogacy, Jewish perspectives, funding options and the practical realities of becoming a parent.

Jewmos is a Melbourne-based community organisation that brings LGBTQ+ Jews and their allies together through social, cultural and educational events.

Jewmos director Jarod Rhine-Davis said the event grew out of conversations with LGBTQ+ Jews who dreamed of raising Jewish children but didn’t know where to begin.

“Many LGBTQ+ Jews dream of raising Jewish children, but the pathway can feel overwhelming. Questions about IVF, surrogacy, legal processes, funding and Jewish perspectives are often difficult to navigate in isolation. We wanted to create a space where people could hear from experts, learn from families who have already been there, and realise they don’t have to figure it all out alone.”

While intended parents are a natural audience, organisers hope the conversation will resonate much more broadly. “This isn’t only about LGBTQ+ people,” Rhine-Davis said. “It’s about Jewish family life. Parents, grandparents, educators, rabbis, health professionals and friends all have a role to play in supporting the next generation. Whether you’re hoping to become a parent yourself or simply want to better understand someone you love, we hope people leave with greater understanding, practical knowledge and a stronger sense of connection.”

Designed as a relaxed Sunday brunch rather than a formal conference, the event will encourage conversation long after the panel concludes. Families are welcome, with a children’s corner hosted by PJ Library and giant bubble entertainment from Naomi Cherny of Shine On Creative. Community organisations will be present to answer questions and connect attendees with support services.
