More than 180 people attended Sydney Shul in Bondi on October 12 for an evening that began with a moving prayer service, attended by Kingsford-Smith MP Matt Thistlethwaite, for the Israel and the IDF.

But afterwards, sadness was turned into positive energy and uplifting spirit through a Family Unity Challah Bake for Israel (pictured).

Rebbetzin Laya Slavin said the idea for the event arose less than 48 hours earlier, centred on the principle that “for every hatred we face, we will spread love [among us] even more”.

“Make this challah together with love, take it to your Shabbat dinner table, and when you are blessing your children, you will also be blessing the children of Israel.”

The event was free, but registered attendees were given the option of making a donation.

Follow-up services for Israel were held at Sydney Shul on October 13 and 14.
