THE Silver Arc Fifth XI got Maccabi Ajax’s season off to a winning start, smashing the Thornbury Turf Strokers by eight wickets.

Craig Werb restricted the opposition snaring three wickets in the process, while Brad Abrahams put the win beyond doubt with a hard-fought 28.

On a beautiful day for cricket, Maccabi started brilliantly with Werb taking a wicket in the first over. The Turf Strokers appeared to get their innings back on track after the early stammer, before youngster Eli Lipshatz swung the momentum back Maccabi Ajax’s way, bowling their number three batsman.

In the next over, Werb bowled the Thornbury captain with a great ball.
Reeling at 3-17, Thornbury had a solid partnership that, with a bit of luck and some good stroke play, contributed 49 runs. Aron Fetter got the much-needed breakthrough, with Mark Shnider snaffling a stunning catch off his bowling.

Fetter and captain Ian Jones took the next three wickets in quick succession, and when Werb, JJ Zimmet and Benji Jones cleaned up the tail, the Fifths were looking at an attainable 119 for victory.

Jones and Mark Shnider had a solid opening stand of 39, before the former was somehow struck on his cheek after the ball sneaked through between the visor and grill. Shnider continued to play a sound innings, hitting 29 before being bowled.

Brad Abrahams and Fetter batted steadily and confidently, as they chased down the target without losing any further wickets.

With nine overs to spare, Maccabi had reached 121 with Abrahams and Fetter both not out.
