Finals, but no flags for Maccabi sides

TWO Maccabi Tennis Club’s senior pennant teams have bowed out of the finals of the Tennis Victoria Winter Pennant post-season
competition.

The Grade 4 Men’s team of Carl Philipp, Steve Gostin (captain) Harvey Kaplan, Jarred Krowitz and Joel Fredman, finished the season in third spot and came up against a strong MCC side in the semifinal.

The rubber got off to a horror start with Philipp, Gostin and Kaplan all losing their singles matches. With the side’s season on the line, 15-year-old Krowitz kept his team alive, with a rousing win. Needing to win the two doubles rubbers to progress through to the next stage of finals, Gostin and Philipp showed no mercy, clinching the match in straight sets and sending the rubber to a deciding doubles match. Fredman and Kaplan, playing at No.1 pair, lost a hard fought three-set contest, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, resulting in Maccabi going down four rubbers to two.

Maccabi Tennis Club’s Veteran’s side, captained by Clive Fredman, finished the home and away season at the top of their section, winning 10 out of 12 matches. The Grade-7 veterans team made it through to the grand final where they played Yarraville, which they had twice defeated during the season. But on the day, due to injuries and sickness, Maccabi could not quite match their previous performances against the strong Yarraville line-up.

Other team members included Paul Kovacs, Fred Wurzel, Adam Needleman, Miguel Donnenfeld Daniel Henquin, and Steve Kleytman.

Maccabi has entered three senior teams in the Bayside Summer Competition, and hope to recruit more players for Winter Pennant in 2011.
