Firsts fall short again

A FIFTY-eight run partnership between Josh Sacks and Julien Wiener was unable to secure victory for the Maccabi AJAX First XI in a rollercoaster game against Parkville District at Gary Smorgon Oval.

The Thirds were the only Maccabi side to register a win in what was a forgettable round for the club.

The Firsts resumed their run-chase of 156 at 2-20 on the second day of play. Both returning batsmen were dismissed with the score on 39, bringing Dean Wiener and Sacks to the crease.

The pair put on 23 before Dean was caught, to be replaced by his father and skipper Julien.

Sacks and Julien batted patiently and sensibly, as the pair took its stellar partnership beyond 50 runs. But when Sacks was controversially dismissed for 38, Maccabi’s middle and lower orders collapsed.

The skipper’s dismissal for 31 not long after brought about a horrendous period of play for the home side, which saw Maccabi dismissed for 129.

The Second XI also had a tough time against Parkville District, crumbling to an outright loss. The side trailed by 93 runs after the first innings and started its comeback well, sitting at 1-63.

But when Simon Fisher (23) and Aaron Fetter (23) were dismissed, the Seconds finished on 157, unable to consolidate a strong lead.

Monash Uni Gryphons then chased down 65 runs for the outright win with just a handful of balls to spare.

The Thirds bounced back from a loss against Monash Uni Gryphons to beat the same side away by 43 runs.

Maccabi recovered from an early wicket to find themselves at 4-92. Gid Gelbart (19) and Chad Davidoff (21) kept the score ticking over, while Matt Gamsu (31) anchored the innings.

Some big hitting from Paul Litinsky (18) boosted the total as the Thirds kicked on to post 132.

The Gryphons started well at 0-43, before Litinsky (3-15) launched a devastating attack on the hosts.

Wily spinner Nathan Rothschild (4-20) then capitalised on Maccabi’s momentum and tore through the middle order, before Davidoff (2-3) swept up the tail as the Thirds completed a remarkable victory, dismissing Monash Uni Gryphons for 89.

The Silver Arc Fourth XI lost to East Malvern Tooronga after failing to chase down the home side’s 4-183.

After conceding the hefty total, the Fourths battled hard to reel in the deficit, but fell short when they were dismissed for 155.
