Dr Eyal Mor, an attending surgeon in the department of general and oncological surgery at Sheba Medical Centre, has arrived down under as the first step in what promises to be an extensive and fruitful collaboration between some of Israel’s and Australia’s leading medical institutions.

Mor has been accepted into the position of Fellow in Surgical Oncology – Melanoma/Sarcoma at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne.

It was only a month ago that Sheba Medical Centre, the largest healthcare facility in the Middle East and one of the top 10 hospitals in the world according to Newsweek, signed a comprehensive collaboration agreement with Peter Mac in the presence of Professor Dominic Wall, Peter Mac executive director of business ventures and Tim Dillon, agent-general UK and commissioner for Victoria in Europe.

The agreement, aimed at fostering new research initiatives and opportunities for staff development in Australia and Israel alike, was finalised during a special event held on Sheba’s healthcare campus.

“It is very gratifying to see our efforts at promoting healthcare collaborations between Australia and Sheba bear fruit. I look forward to discovering how this latest agreement improves care in both countries,” said Idan Goldberger, executive director of the Australian Friends of Sheba.

Mor will be working under the supervision of Professor David Gyorki, a world leader in the field, and will be exposed to a wide spectrum of complex surgical oncology related to all aspects of management of patients with melanoma and soft tissue sarcoma.

Mor will play a central role in the multidisciplinary meetings and assist in a wide variety of surgeries. He will have extensive research exposure, and in the second year of his fellowship, will have a significant research focus. His training will help him in further developing the surgical oncology aspect at Sheba and will contribute to collaboration in research between the two centres.

Mor is joined by his wife, Dr Danielle Hadar-Mor, a Sheba gyneco-oncologist, and their two children. Funds are currently being raised to secure Hadar-Mor’s fellowship in the Royal Women’s Hospital.

As part of the MOU collaboration between leading Australian and Israeli cancer centres, Sheba and Peter Mac have signed an agreement to foster new international research collaborations. It will help promote global health through collaboration with prime institutions in the world.

“I am looking forward to experiencing a different medical centre and discovering the differences and similarities in our treatments and methodologies,” said Mor.

“In medicine, these kinds of collaborations between clinicians of different backgrounds, and the sharing of unique perspectives, are, I think, critical to advancing research and care and will benefit both the people of Israel and Australia.”

In a statement following the signing, Peter Mac CEO, Professor Shelley Dolan, remarked: “Engaging with leading global medical institutions opens new opportunities for Peter Mac’s staff and supports our mission to provide the world’s best cancer care to Australians.

“We are delighted to be working with an organisation of Sheba Medical Centre’s stature and look forward to the new collaborations and opportunities this agreement will make possible.”

A recognised leader in medical innovation, Sheba founded the ARC ecosystem, which accelerates innovation and redesigns healthcare collaboratively, developing and implementing the processes that would transform healthcare globally while bridging the gap between Israeli advances and the needs of patients, caregivers, and healthcare systems across the globe.

Sheba Medical Centre is represented in Australia by the Australian Friends of Sheba, an NGO dedicated to strengthening ties between Sheba, Australian medical and research institutions, and Australian society in general while fostering collaborations for the benefit of all sides.
