MACCABI’S Premier League Lakers side has moved through to next week’s grand final, after trumping the Hurricanes 76-66 in a superb semifinal on Monday night.
In the side’s gutsiest display for the year, the Lakers recovered from a nine-point, half-time deficit to claw their way back and outscore their opposition 45-26 in the second half.
Five Maccabi players reached double figures – including Simon Platt (18 points), Barry Dubovsky (15) and Matt Bineth (11) – in what was a huge victory for the club.
Other Maccabi teams through to the grand final include the under-18 boys Celtics, both the under-14 Jets and Mavericks, who will face each other, and the under-14 girls Cheetahs.
The Celtics got up in a thrilling 41-38 win over YMCA, securing the victory with only seconds to go.
JJ Fuchs (15 points) was the hero when he executed perfectly from the free-throw line, while Josh Berg chipped in with 13 of his own. They will now meet Inner City Storm, who finished on top of the Division 2 ladder.
Maccabi will have both grand finalists in the under-14 Division 3 competition, after the Jets and Mavericks recorded convincing wins in their respective semifinals.
The Jets toppled rivals Reddam 39-24 in a great all-round team effort, which saw the likes of Mikey Benchoam, Jack Burman, Jesse Santer, Grant Saacks, Sam Springer and Zac Morris star for Maccabi.
They are set to take on the undefeated Mavericks, who trounced the Western Rebels 39-11 in an impressive display.
Darren Saacks was the standout for Maccabi, alongside Jayden Gordon, who shot 10 points.
The Cheetahs put in an outstanding performance to beat the Newtown Bullets for the second week in a row.
The Maccabi team was forced to do it tough the second time around, managing a narrow 17-15 win to advance to the grand final against CYS Blue. Martine Agranat top-scored with 11 points in a great team effort.
The other highlight for Maccabi was the standout performances by the club’s under-8 boys sides.
The Spurs took full control of the Maccabi derby against the Lightning, winning 38-2 in a dominant display. Jonah Vaysbakh had an outstanding game, shooting a staggering 20 points for the Spurs.
Meanwhile, the Thunder also recorded a highly convincing win, smashing the Bondi Lions 36-7, with Jesse Hallis also dominating with 20 points and several rebounds.
The Lakers play in the Premier League final at 7.45pm on Monday night at the Alexandria Basketball Stadium, Maddox St.
