Freund (pictured on right, at Maccabi NSW’s mega camp) won gold at the Australian Open in the men’s under-84kg category, winning all his bouts, including the final against Wilheim Hieber.

He also won silver, in a field of 48, in the open men’s competition, reaching the final, which he lost 2-3 to Daniel Tielen, the over-84kg national champion.

Basckin won bronze in the men’s under-60kg competition, with two wins and a loss.

Basckin lost 1-3 to Trevor Kan in the under-60kg final.

Freund said he was “pretty happy with the results”.

“I was close to my best last Saturday, and won the Aussie title comfortably.

“I’m a bit disappointed in losing the Oceania final, but I’ll learn from it.

“And excitedly, I’m off to Spain for the world champs in November.”
