A Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to education, particularly STEM.
Perth scientist Geoffrey Kay has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to education, particularly STEM.
He was for many years deeply involved in the CSIRO’s “Scientists in Schools” program.
“We worked with the kids. We showed them how to code robots so that they could then run their own programs on the robots,” he said.
Kaye said it was the kids who ran the projects which won the Bravo Junior robotics competition, from an idea that the students had.
Kaye said his OAM is a recognition of the wonderful work that is done by all science educators at primary schools in Western Australia, especially the teachers at Perth’s Coolbinia Primary School who are involved in the STEM Professionals in Schools program.
“I am deeply humbled when I think that my passions and simple endeavours can so positively impact the lives of others. To me the award is also a testament to the support and encouragement I have received from my family – my children, their spouses, and my grandchildren, along with many friends, and colleagues,” Kaye said.
Above all, he is especially grateful to Barbara, who has been his partner for the past 60 years.
Kaye said the announcement “holds special significance for me, as it now shares the date with the joyous news of the rescue of four hostages in Israel. May this mark the beginning of a hopeful path toward the release of all remaining hostages”.
