THE festival that unifies the community in a celebration of Jewish life and culture is getting ready for another year.

In One Voice is set to take place in Selwyn Street, Elsternwick this Sunday, March 15.

Music, dance, food, art and an array of activities promise to entertain for the day, representing a diverse spectrum of the Melbourne Jewish landscape.

The street concert will feature festival favourites 22-piece klezmer-funk outfit, YID!, with the Bashevis Singers, Vered Harel, Yoni Giraffe and the East St Kilda Klezmer Ensemble also billed to take the stage.

Meanwhile, culinary whiz Alice Zaslavsky – better known as Alice in Frames – will MC at the Nosh Tent.

In a shift away from the traditional cooking competitions between individuals, this year the spotlight will be on communal organisations Subbotnik, C Care, Chabad Malvern and Our Village Kitchen, who will host cooking demonstrations and highlight their communal work throughout the day.

“By bringing together some of the community’s most loved organisations to cook, I hope that people get inspired to cook for themselves,” enthused Zaslavsky.

“I love that these organisations cook meals for vulnerable members of the community. I think one thing that we forget, is that when people are struggling, there is nothing better than a home cooked meal. It makes you feel part of the community.”

And for Zaslavsky, the spirit of the Nosh Tent extends beyond its activities. She hopes the space encourages the establishment of new, lasting relationships between organisations and community members.

Musing on the special place of Jewish food in the worldwide kitchen, Zaslavsky kvells, “There is always a sense of generosity – we basically invented share plates!”

The festival’s extensive food market includes kosher and vegan options, with Hamsa Hummus, Mama Falafel and Hilulim set to serve up Middle-Eastern delights. Will’s Batch will be scooping their handmade ice creams, and Howzit Brew, Coffee Mule and Liquid Infusion will be pouring refreshments.

As for the creatives in our midst, the With One Brush art exhibition will showcase the work of artists across the community, with a $1000 prize awarded to the top piece as deemed by a panel of judges which includes famed local artist Anna Blatman.

Meanwhile, the With One Aim community groups expo provides a platform for almost 100 Jewish communal organisations to share their work and spread their mission, reflecting the pluralism of the community.
