IT has become fairly clear by now that the days of no community transmission of COVID-19 in Sydney are well behind us.

With daily case numbers now averaging around 200 new infections, despite the herculean efforts of our contact tracers, coronavirus is now something we have to live with.

The delta variant is a game changer; it turned everything we thought we knew on its head. Whereas with previous strains of the virus, one person typically infected three others, with delta, one can infect eight. We are also seeing more young people and people without co-morbidities falling seriously ill.

There is only one way out now to reclaim a sense of normality.

Vaccination.

That is why The AJN is proud to get behind the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies’ vaccination campaign.

We encourage all eligible members of the community who have not done so, to book their shots.

We say to those who may be feeling hesitant, talk to your doctor and get the real facts on vaccination and vaccine options, including the extremely minimal associated risks.

And we implore all unvaccinated members of the community to seriously consider the risks – to themselves and others – of not getting a jab.

Only by getting vaccinated, will we again be able to gather in shule.

Only by getting vaccinated, will extended families again be able to enjoy Shabbat and Yom Tov meals together.

Only by getting vaccinated, will we be able to celebrate simchas such as weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs with our friends and families.

Only by getting vaccinated, will grandparents be able to enjoy the naches of spending time with their grandchildren.

Only by getting vaccinated, will each and every eligible member of our community have their best chance to avoid infection and/or falling seriously ill.

Only by getting vaccinated, can we ensure we protect others – including the ones we love.

Only by getting vaccinated, can we ensure an end to lockdowns and the steep toll they take on the economy, business, the marginalised and frail, and on the mental health of the community.

For all our sakes, book your shots at the earliest opportunity.
