NORTH Caulfield Maccabi women’s soccer team delivered an outstanding performance last Sunday, defeating league leaders Mooroolbark 2-1.

In a thrilling finish, Ellie Kras scored her second goal of the game with less than five minutes remaining to shore up the victory and catapult North Caulfield to fifth place on the ladder.

Heavily favoured Mooroolbark were under attack early from North Caulfield’s aggressive forays, and it paid dividends when Jess Nash’s through ball found Rebecca Rubenstein, whose wayward shot took a deft touch from Kras and dribbled through for the opening goal.

First-half goalkeeper Samantha Blau pulled off several impressive saves, well helped by North Caulfield’s suffocating defence that prevented Mooroolbark from evening the score.

Nat Court and Naomi Mossenson patrolled the midfield with authority, putting their silky skills on display and creating several scoring opportunities for their forwards.

Mooroolbark levelled the scores midway through the second half, penetrating North Caulfield’s stifling defence with a powerful strike that zoomed past substitute goalkeeper Nash.

Tensions mounted as each team desperately searched for the winner, with the back-and-forth action guaranteeing a nailbiting finish.

And Kras did not disappoint, providing a last-minute goal that sealed a spectacular win for North Caulfield, which keeps the side in touch with the top four.

North Caulfield plays Box Hill United on Sunday at 5pm.
Wembley Park p(Melway 61 F1).
