Gong for Kerryn Phelps
Former Wentworth MP Kerryn Phelps said she is 'honoured' to be named category winner in the field of public policy at the AFR Women of Influence Awards.
FORMER Wentworth MP Kerryn Phelps was named category winner in the field of public policy at the Australian Financial Review Women of Influence Awards last week.
“This award was largely in recognition of the work that I did to change the narrative and to change the legislation around the way Australia treats people who are seeking asylum and refugees in indefinite offshore detention,” she said.
“Australia can and should do better … These are some of the most vulnerable people on Earth.”
While in Canberra, Phelps was a key figure in both the #KidsoffNauru campaign and the Medevac legislation.
“I feel very honoured but I accept the award as one person in a much bigger ecosystem of public policy development,” she said, noting the many doctors, aid workers and advocates who work in the field.
She also noted the importance of recognising women’s achievements, saying, “So often the contribution of women has been neglected or ignored.”
