GREEN by name and green by nature, 21-year-old Sydneysider Aley Greenblo has been selected as a finalist in the Miss Earth Australia pageant.
A law and commerce student at the University of NSW, Greenblo is a self-proclaimed lover of the environment.
“I’ve always been completely obsessed with the environment. I’m very environmentally aware,” she told The AJN. “I’m a down-to-earth girl who loves the earth and I want to make people more aware and proactive about the environment.”
The third-year university student credits a friend and past finalist with her interest in the Australian component of the world’s third-largest beauty pageant. In preparation, she has taken on various environmental initiatives, including a weekly bush rejuvenation project, tree planting, cleaning Sydney’s beaches and even adopting a panda.
“I want to create awareness. Anyone can help out doing even the smallest things, from buying cosmetics not tested on animals, picking up rubbish and planting trees. It’s so easy and every little thing helps,” she said.
Greenblo said it was the motto of the competition — beauty with a cause — and the opportunity to create environmental awareness that appealed to her.
“I know sometimes there is negative spin associated with pageants but this is for the earth,” she said.
Working towards the national title in September, Greenblo will be up against seven others vying for the Australian sash. The winner will then travel to Vietnam to contest the Miss Earth world title.
“I’m very eager to be the first Aussie to do that. Fingers crossed,” she said of the opportunity to be ambassador for the cause for one year. “I’m just a normal, down-to-earth girl and I never thought I would be a finalist.”
