SPEAKING at Jewish MP Mark Dreyfus’ campaign launch on Tuesday, Labor up-and-comer Greg Combet pledged that a re-elected government would work hard to introduce a price on carbon.

More than 300 people gathered at the Chelsea RSL, in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, for the launch of Dreyfus’ campaign to be re-elected in Isaacs.

Combet, the Minister for Defence Materiel and Science and the Minister Assisting the Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, was on hand to give Dreyfus’ re-election efforts a push along.

In a speech that focussed mostly on economic matters, Combet, who was given responsibility for cleaning up the bungled insulation program, pledged ALP support for an emissions trading scheme.

The former union heavyweight said that like the 1998 waterfront dispute — which as assistant secretary of the Australian Council of Trade Unions he was instrumental in resolving — climate change is not a particularly popular cause, but it is vitally important.

“You must not lose faith in Labor about our determination to deal with climate change, we will do it,” he said. “Mark Dreyus, the Member for Isaacs, who is a great friend of mine, who I strongly support, he is one of the greatest contributors intellectually to this issue in the federal parliament.
