Greens going backwards
The poll results will likely place pressure on Labor not to preference the Greens.
Growing support for the Liberals in the Melbourne seat of Macnamara would place Jewish MP Josh Burns in third place, behind the Liberals and Greens, a new poll commissioned by the conservative lobby group Advance has found.
According to pollster Insightfully, primary votes would see the Liberals on 37.6 per cent, the Greens at 27.9 per cent and Labor with 25.9 per cent.
In the 2022 election, the Liberals had 29 per cent, Labor was 31.8 per cent and the Greens were 29.6 per cent.
The poll results will likely place pressure on Labor not to preference the Greens, which could otherwise enable a Greens win in Macnamara.
Burns responded to the poll by stating, “There is only one poll that matters and that is election day.
“What we do know is that there are only two parties who can win Macnamara – Labor or the Greens. A vote for the Liberals is only going to risk a Greens victory,” he said. “Last election there were less than 500 votes between me and the Greens, so I know this election will be close. I will continue to fight and do everything I can to be a strong voice for our community.”
Liberal candidate for Macnamara Benson Saulo told The AJN, “Macnamara deserves a representative who will always stand with the Jewish community and Israel. The real question now is: will Josh Burns preference the Greens?”
The poll also looked at 600 voters each in the seats of Brisbane, Ryan and Griffith in Queensland which are held by the Greens, as well the Victorian seats of Macnamara, Wills and Melbourne.
It found the Greens could lose two Queensland seats to the Liberal National Party while a third was too close to call, and they would likely retain Melbourne.
Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-CEO Alex Ryvchin condemned the Greens for their “militant anti-Israel positions, their thinly veiled admiration for terrorists and their contempt for Australian law enforcement”. He added, “They are the party of the encampments, ugly street protests and of open displays of antisemitism. Australians want peace, prosperity and opportunity. It is no wonder they’re turning away from a band of ideologues who favour command economies and autocratic rulers.”
Advance is running a campaign against the Greens.
