GYMNAST Janey Nestadt took to the big stage last week, competing in the National Championships in Perth.
The six top gymnasts from each state went head-to-head in the National Level Eight Competition, which featured both team and individual competitions, on the first and second day respectively.
On the second day of the competition, following the individual apparatus and all-around final, Nestadt turned in a stunning performance to finish third in the country, and claim the status as the highest-ranked Victorian gymnast. A Queenslander won the competition and in second place was a gymnast from NSW.
Capping off the outstanding performance, Nestadt finished second place on floor, and fourth on vault.
“I was very excited with how it went, I wasn’t expecting that at all,” she told The AJN.
A year 10 student at Bialik College, the young gymnast recently competed in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Victorian Championships, taking out gold in the vault and silver in the floor competition.
The competition took place at the State Netball and Hockey Centre over the Queen’s birthday weekend, where Nestadt competed at National Level Eight in the vault, bars, balance beam and floor disciplines in both the team and individual competitions. She also contested the all-around finals, which awards competitors a composite score based on all disciplines.
Nestadt’s MLC team won the gold medal on day one of the competition, and with it the Victorian National Eight Title. Following her team’s performance on the first day, Nestadt backed up with silver in the all-around finals.
The 15-year-old was ecstatic with her results and said winning the medals came as a relief.
“There was lots of pressure riding on this competition, as I had been doing quite well in the previous competitions and I was hoping it would all pay off when it really counted.”
Nestadt admitted she had to make sacrifices, including training five days a week and missing “a bit of school”.
Prior to her success in the Victorian Championships, she competed in two state trials where she made the Victorian team by placing in the top five in the individual events.
