Veteran broadcaster Ray Hadley was left stunned after an anonymous 2GB listener donated a large sum to the charity Youth Off the Streets on behalf of the Jewish community.

“I’ve witnessed one of the most generous acts I’ve ever witnessed,” Hadley said on his morning radio talk show.

Hadley, who recently announced his retirement from radio, said he received a note that simply said, “I wish to make a donation to a charity of Ray Hadley’s choice for his unwavering support of the Jewish community during a very challenging time for us of the Jewish faith. It would also be a gift for his 70th birthday and to celebrate his career.”

The donor requested the donation go to a charity supporting children who may not receive Christmas gifts due to financial difficulties and that the donation remain anonymous. “So I left it at that, and you wouldn’t believe it, but I just received the note before the news that this gentleman has donated $36,000,” said Hadley.

He continued, “The comment from the gentleman says, ‘for Ray Hadley’s unwavering support for the Jewish community, his 70th birthday, and his retirement’.

“I’m absolutely stunned. And then the figure, $36,000. The gentleman tells me in the Jewish faith, a religion that emphasises the importance of life … that 18, and a combination thereof, represents a popular number that represents good luck for those of the Jewish faith. So double 18 is 36, so $36,000 jumps in to Youth Off the Streets.”

Hadley expressed his gratitude. “My support of your faith is very simple; it’s the right thing to do. Obviously, I’m not Jewish, but I have many Jewish friends, and the treatment of the Jewish faith since October 7 … has been less than favourable.

“You have no idea what a difference you’ve made to young people who will now be able to spend Christmas opening presents,” he added.
