SOUTHPORT Hapoel FC is set to take the next step in the club’s short evolution, launching a second team and eyeing off a finals berth for its senior side.

Having finished mid-table in 2013 and making the quarter final in the VicSoccer League Cup, the club is striving for more success in the upcoming season.

“We want to do the same again and take the senior team to the next level,” new club president Michael Leigh told The AJN.

“We’re pushing for a finals berth and with a senior coach who has many years of experience in the Football Federation of Victoria, we’re very ambitious.

“We’re tethering the boundaries of the competitive and social aspects, but we’re taking this year seriously.”

With a growing number of players and a developing support group, the club has established a second team that will play on Sunday afternoons and is expanding its board.

“It’s been a busy off-season,” Leigh said.

“There’s been lots of interest from players, potential coaching staff and senior figures of the Jewish community who want to get involved and potentially join the board.”

“So with the overwhelming response, we’re pushing hard to expand to two teams, which really fits the ethos of our social club and caters for as much of the community as we can.”

The club will return to pre-season training in early February and is still taking registrations for the upcoming season.
