WITH many young families joining the Hobart Jewish community, the Hobart Synagogue has decided to create the Hobart Hebrew Kids Group (HHKG).

Starting in February, the HHKG will meet every second Sunday of the month to engage with Jewish culture and Hebrew language.

With 20 children participating, the group enjoys singing and dancing to Israeli songs such as Hava Nagila, playing games with Hebrew letters and learning about Jewish festivals through writing and educational activities.

Throughout this year, kids have enjoyed baking challot, building a cardboard succah and creating a chanukiah from salt dough with pipe-cleaner candles.

Families enjoyed Tu b’Shevat in the garden, Lag b’Omer on the beach with a bonfire, Shavuot in the shule and a special blowing of the shofar at Rosh Hashanah by the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra’s Israeli principal trumpet player.

Hobart shule’s Michal Golebowicz also recalled a kids’ Shabbat on the beach – with some of the children observing the sun setting over the water to signal the arrival of Shabbat.

Golebowicz said she hopes that many more families will join the small but growing congregation and wished everyone “a chag Chanukah Sameach!”
