The Jewish couple who heroically confronted one of the Bondi terrorists early on in the attack have been identified as Boris, 69, and Sofia Gurman, 61.

Dramatic video emerged on Tuesday of Boris seemingly managing to wrestle a gun from Sajid Akram, with both falling to the ground in a violent struggle next to Akram’s car that has an ISIS flag draped over the front windscreen.

In the footage Sofia remains by her husband’s side throughout. Tragically, both Boris and Sofia were then murdered.

“Boris was a retired mechanic, known for his generosity, quiet strength and willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. Sofia worked at Australia Post and was deeply loved by her colleagues and community. Together, they lived honest, hardworking lives and treated everyone they met with kindness, warmth and respect,” their family said in a statement.

“Boris and Sofia were devoted to their family and to each other. They were the heart of our family, and their absence has left an immeasurable void.

“In recent days, we have become aware of footage showing Boris, with Sofia by his side, courageously attempting to disarm an attacker in an effort to protect others. While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness. This encapsulates who Boris and Sofia were – people who instinctively and selflessly tried to help others.

“We are deeply grateful for the love, compassion and support that has been shown to our family during this unimaginable time.”

Boris and Sofia’s courageous efforts came before Syrian immigrant Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, tackled Akram from behind, then wrestled a long-barrelled gun from him. The incredible footage has been viewed more than 22 million times on social media.

The vision also shows grandfather Reuven Morrison running towards the now-unarmed shooter and throwing a brick at him. As the shooter starts to walk away, Morrison and Ahmed remain crouched behind a tree, before both were shot by the other terrorist. Morrison was killed, while Ahmed remains injured in hospital, where he has been visited by both Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns.

“Ahmed is a real-life hero,” Minns said.

“His incredible bravery no doubt saved countless lives when he disarmed a terrorist at enormous personal risk.”

Albanese said Ahmed was “just trying to get a cup of coffee” when the horrific shooting began on Sunday evening.

“He decided to take action and his bravery is an inspiration for all Australians,” Albanese said.
