Israel’s President Isaac Herzog met with new United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Sunday to pay his condolences, after the death of the Gulf state’s leader Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan.

“He left behind him a legacy of progress and friendship between the nations of the region and of striving for peace in the Middle East,” Herzog was quoted as saying.

He also congratulated the new leader on becoming president.

“You are continuing the path of your brother, in that you brought about a dramatic change following the Abraham Accords you signed with the State of Israel and other countries,” Herzog said.

“I believe that together we will advance and strengthen the prosperous ties of peace, between us and our countries.”

Herzog was accompanied by Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel and Regional Cooperation Minister Esawi Frej.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Friday, “Sheikh Khalifa’s legacy and tremendous deeds are greatly admired in Israel.

“The State of Israel stands alongside the United Arab Emirates at this difficult time.”

The late UAE head of state was rarely seen in public since suffering a stroke in January 2014, with the country largely ruled by his half-brother and the new President Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who led the country’s normalisation process with Israel in 2020.
