Speaker of the House of Representatives Milton Dick said it is a “great honour and privilege” to be leading a bipartisan Australian Parliamentary Delegation to Israel and the Palestinian Territories.

Also part of the delegation are Labor MPs Michelle Ananda-Rajah and Tania Lawrence, and independent Zoe Daniel.

“This is the first time an Australian Speaker has led such a high level delegation,” Dick wrote on social media.

“Our delegation was welcomed to the Knesset by Speaker Amir Ohana. I was honoured to lay a wreath at the Gal-Ed Memorial and signed the guest book on behalf of the Australian Parliament.”

Ananda-Rajah said, “A warm welcome awaited us followed by productive discussions with Speaker Ohana and members of the Knesset on national security, judicial reform, gender equity, climate change and innovation.

“Our cultural and historic ties with Israel run deep and we look forward to strengthening the relationship.”

The delegation visited Yad Vashem and attended a memorial ceremony in the Hall of Remembrance.

“It was an honour to rekindle the Eternal Flame and lay a wreath,” Dick said.

The delegation also travelled to Beersheba and the Commonwealth War Cemetery, where Dick laid a wreath “on behalf of the Australian Parliament where we remembered our fallen soldiers in the Battle of Beersheba during the First World War”.
