Magda Steiner, a survivor of the Holocaust, celebrated her 100th birthday last month in Melbourne, and in lieu of gifts this year she chose to raise funds for the Women’s International Zionist Organisation (WIZO).

Born in Szombathelj, Hungary, Magda was the only child of Szidi and Jeno Holzer. Her life took a turn during the Holocaust, during which she survived both Auschwitz and Allendorf.

After the war, she married Erno Steiner and, together with her mother Szidi, they migrated to Melbourne in 1948. The family made a new life in Australia, settling in Burwood then East St Kilda, and later in Caulfield. Magda and Erno raised two daughters, Susanne Braun (Zsuzsa) and Julie Isman.

Erno passed away in 1998 and in later years, Magda found companionship with Laci Lomsky, who was her partner for 10 years until his passing.

Today, Magda enjoys spending time with her five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
