Honour for UIA stalwart

TWENTY-SIX years ago, a newly retired Sam Steif walked into UIA’s office and asked to be given something to do.

Having raised over $40 million for Israel since in his role as director of wills and bequests, Steif was recently honoured as a “Theodor Herzl Founder” by Keren Hayesod-UIA director Irit Barash during her visit to Sydney.

A modest Steif told The AJN the award was unexpected but “much appreciated”.

“Whatever I do, I do because I feel it’s necessary and if I can help in any way I can, I don’t expect anything as a reward,” he said.

A long-time community activist, Steif has been involved with JCA since its inception in addition to JNF and was also president and honorary life president of the now defunct Strathfield Synagogue.

He said he had no idea about wills and bequests when he began the role in which he has since excelled.

At the age of 91 he still works two days a week in the UIA office.

“I don’t think I could live without [the work]. I’ve always been like that – I like to get involved, to be with people, talk to people, meet people,” he said.

“I couldn’t imagine – even at my age – saying ‘I put my feet up, I’ve had enough’. I don’t think I would live much longer if I would do that. It keeps me going.”

UIA NSW CEO Yair Miller said the organisation is most grateful to Steif.

“Sam is a true asset to the Sydney Jewish community and the Jewish people,” he said.

“UIA has reaped the benefits of Sam’s dedication and hard work over the last 26 years. The seeds he has planted in that time will bear fruit for many years to come as will the Seniors Study Missions he initiated and led.”

He added: “Sam’s involvement in the community and his connection to Israel is undying. His contribution to communal organisations is not only through the UIA but also through other prominent organisations.

“Sam’s strength lies in his dedication to the UIA and the State of Israel. Sam has an ability to communicate his passionate belief and is aware of the importance of the continuity of the Jewish people.

“Through Sam’s hard work the continuity of the Jewish people and the Jewish State is ensured.”
