Honouring Jewish Anzacs
NSW Governor Margaret Beazley was the guest of honour at the NSW Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women’s 2019 Remembrance Day service.
NSW Governor Margaret Beazley was welcomed by more than 200 people attending the NSW Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women’s (NAJEX) 2019 Remembrance Day Service, held at the Sydney Jewish Museum on Sunday, November 3.
Governor Beazley was one of many to lay a wreath in honour of all Australia’s war dead at the ceremony, which had a particular focus on reflecting on the ultimate sacrifice paid by almost 200 Jewish Diggers who lost their lives during the Great War.
Highlights included prayers, candle lighting, and informative speeches by Sarah Goldman about her grandfather Sylvester Henry Browne’s service in the Australian Light Horse, and by Indigenous ex-serviceman Colin Watego about three generations of his family proudly serving in the ADF.
The ceremony concluded with Governor Beazley presenting NAJEX Youth Awards to Maya Goodman (Moriah College), Jake Lewitton (Emanuel School), Ori Lewin (Masada College) and Koby Berkovits (Kesser Torah College).
Remembrance Day will be observed across the country at 11am on November 11, when the guns on the Western Front finally fell silent in 1918 following almost five years of continuous warfare.
