Hornets hold court

MACCABI won the Northern Suburbs Basketball Association Women’s Division-C championship last Thursday night.

The Hornets defeated the Redbacks 26-22, only two weeks after defeating the same team in the major preliminary final by six points.

“It was a very tense game and we really didn’t know which way it was going to go,” coach Yoel Hyman said.

The match was level at 18-18 as the clock wound down, but then the Hornets ran away with the victory. “For some reason, the girls just decided to take the game away and dominated the last few minutes of the match.

“Katie Norwood was really good with the ball in hand, and Kristy Freney was solid at the back of the court, which helped to stop the Redbacks scoring,” the Hornets coach said.

Centre Kelly Edinburg, who Hyman described as having been the most consistent and impressive player throughout the season, said the entire grand final week was exciting.

“We were promoting the match on Facebook all week, and so
the atmosphere was fantastic. Everyone was in good spirits and we had a lot of support on the night,” Edinburg said.

“We expected we were going to win because we had played well all season, but we were down 6-0 at the beginning of the match and we had to come back.”
