GOVERNOR-GENERAL David Hurley has stressed the importance of remaining vigilant to “ensure this darkest chapter in history never repeats”.

Hurley, together with his wife Linda, arrived in Israel on Tuesday to join more than 45 world leaders at Yad Vashem for the World Holocaust Forum today (Thursday).

Earlier this week, the couple met with the President of Israel Reuven Rivlin, ahead of his state visit to Australia next month.

“The importance of remembering and reflecting on the atrocities of the Holocaust has not diminished in the 75 years since Auschwitz was liberated,” Hurley said.

“We remember and reflect both to honour the victims – the millions upon millions of lives lost, the families destroyed – and to learn. To learn so that we remain vigilant to ensure this darkest chapter in history never repeats.”
