Former AJAX Junior Footy Club player Campbell Hyman is excelling as a rising umpiring talent.

The 22-year-old was named Umpire of the Year at the 2022 Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) Awards night, held late last month.

The award recognises an umpire who consistently shows a high level of umpiring ability, commitment, who has a good feel for the game, and an effective rapport with clubs.

It is judged by the VAFA umpire coaching group.

After playing for seven seasons for AJAX juniors, Hyman decided to switch to umpiring six years ago, officiating in VAFA games on Saturdays, and in South Metro Junior Football League games on Sundays.

He has so far umpired 127 VAFA games.

AJAX Footy Club secretary Peter Kagan told The AJN that Hyman “is a very consistent and fair umpire who has a good rapport with players”, and he thoroughly deserves the award.

“Campbell has aspirations to be an umpire at the top level, and he is very capable.

“The next step up for him would be the Victorian Football League.”

Also at the 2022 VAFA Awards, AJAX player Julie Caplan polled well for Best & Fairest in women’s division 2, coming fifth, while AJAX men’s captain Nick Lewis came equal ninth for Best & Fairest in men’s Premier B grade.
