In shock upset, Israel defeats Brazil to advance to U-20 semifinal
Blue and Whites pull out 3-2 overtime win against global soccer powerhouse, continuing the team’s cinderella run at World Cup in Argentina
In a major shock upset, Israel has beaten global soccer powerhouse Brazil 3-2 in extra time at the Under-20 World Cup, advancing to the semifinals and continuing the team’s Cinderella run.
It comes after the team on Tuesday defeated Uzbekistan 1-0 in dramatic fashion.
This year marks Israel’s first-ever trip to the U-20 World Cup tournament. Its lone trip to the main World Cup in 1970 ended without a single win.
Before starting to turn things around against Japan last Saturday, Israel suffered a heartbreaking, last-minute defeat to Colombia in the first game and a lukewarm draw against Senegal in the second.
The tournament is being held in Argentina after Indonesia’s spot as host and participant was stripped over protests in the Muslim-majority country against hosting the Israeli team.
