Inclusive new theatre initiative
A Night at the Movie Musicals, the workshop's showcase performance, debuts on December 1.
Stars and the Moon Theatre Company is well known for its blockbuster musicals that create opportunities for connection and artistic expression, both on and off the stage, in a way that reflects and harnesses the diverse abilities of our community.
In a move to broaden its outreach to members of the community and to produce more than one performance a year, Stars and the Moon recently launched a five-week workshop series.
A Night at the Movie Musicals, the workshop’s showcase performance, debuts on December 1.
It will feature over 70 stars of all abilities performing iconic songs from Hairspray, Grease, Chicago, Guys and Dolls, The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King, and many more.
Fundraising coordinator Joey Wilkinson told The AJN the aim of the workshops is to offer more inclusive, less strenuous theatre experiences in acting, dancing and singing.
“The annual productions generally had a capacity of 40 to 45 people on stage. They are a mammoth effort for all involved, especially the participants, and the 16-week timeline is not easy for everyone.
“We want to organise additional showcases or performance opportunities alongside the annual production, allowing more participants to be on stage,” Wilkinson said.
Lauren McKinnon, a seasoned director in the theatre space and passionate about disability advocacy, joined Stars and Moon as artistic director in September after founder Eitan Meyerowitz made aliyah.
A mentorship program is also underway in which experienced members can guide and support newer entertainers in their theatre journey.
“The key is to continue expanding the organisation’s offerings and accessibility to provide more inclusive theatre experiences for people of all-abilities,” Wilkinson added.
A Night at the Movie Musicals is at St Kilda Town Hall Theatre on Sunday, December 1, 7- 9pm.
