Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) president Daniel Aghion has slammed graffiti at the University of Melbourne that says “F**k Zionism” as “truly disappointing”.

“The University of Melbourne Student Union made an entirely fair decision to rescind the racist and odious resolution that had previously passed,” he said.

“For students to react by vandalising university property with vulgar slogans is truly disappointing.

“Just as other national groups have the right, under international law, to self-determination, so too do the world’s Jews. The existence of the State of Israel, as a manifestation of that right to self-determination, is regrettably rejected by a tiny number of Australians.

“This position is incomprehensible. We do not condemn Greeks or Indians for supporting their homeland. Why should it be any different for Jews?

“These rejectionists, some of whom seem to be associated with the University of Melbourne student body, have every right to express themselves, but should think carefully about the impact of their actions on their fellow students.”
