Jew Talkin’ To Me? With Juliet Meyers and Ben Van Der Velde

This week’s guests are actor, comedian and improvisor Ben Van Der Velde, and comedian and writer for TV and radio Juliet Meyers.

A new, unashamedly Jewish comedy chat show for everyone. Created and hosted by award winning comedians Rachel Creeger and Philip Simon, and produced by Russell Balkind. Jew Talkin' to Me? is packed with stories, opinions, jokes, opinions, laughs, and, as it’s a Jewish show, even more opinions! Each week we’ll chat to some of the UK’s best loved Jewish comedians, presenters, broadcasters, journalists and actors. They’ll share their own unique perspectives on being 21st century Jews as well as their memories of growing up and what being Jewish means to them. Join us as we kick off with a brief introduction to the upcoming series.

Over the past decade Ben Van der Velde has spread joy and nonsense to all four corners of the British Isles, as well as Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Norway. He is a regular host and act for respected British comedy clubs such as The Comedy Store, Komedia, The Glee, The Stand, the Frog & Bucket and Comedy Club 4 Kids, as well as hosting stages for Bestival, Festival No.6, End of the Road and Sunday Papers Live. He also has experience of performing at RAF Bases, large corporate events, hosting comedy workshops and doing audience warm-up for Deal Or No Deal. On top of that, he has taken commissions to perform a voodoo re-marriage ceremony, founded the Church of the Holy Kazoo with comedy legend Mark Thomas, walked the entire London Underground network to raise money for The Refugee Council, hosted a comedy tour of the FIFA Museum in Zurich and even took part in experiments at The Royal Society that revealed him to have the most infectious laugh of any human, rat or monkey. Ben is a regular performer at the Edinburgh Festival, where he has performed five critically-acclaimed shows: Chain Letter, Strudelhead, Barbarians,Sidekick and Fablemaker. In 2016 his show received 5 and 4 star reviews, whilst several of jokes made it into lists of ‘Best Joke at the Fringe’ compiled by The Scotsman, i-News and The Huffington Post. Ben has two podcasts, “Worst Foot Forward” and “Classic Joke Club” which he also runs as an Edinburgh show.

 

Juliet Meyers: @julietmeyers

Juliet Meyers is a stand-up comedian, MC and writer and recently appeared on Jason Manford’s weekly stand up show on Zoom. She has written for Sarah Millican, on “The Sarah Millican Television Programme” and her radio series “Elephant in the Room”.  Juliet has also written for panellists on “8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown” (channel 4), “Mock The Week” (BBC2), Radio 4’s “News Quiz” and “Now Show”, Radio 2’s “Listomania with Susan Calman”, “Breaking the News” (BBC Radio Scotland),as well as topical jokes for various end of the year news round ups. Juliet has taught comedy at University of Brunel and courses on self expression and resilience through comedy at various secondary schools. She was previously a writer and editor of educational teen magazines for 10 years. A familiar face at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival since 2004, her solo shows have been received with critical acclaim. Most recently she has been working with a new comedy partner, her dog Homer, who co-starred in “This Flipping Rescue Dog Has Ruined My Life” and “Year of the Dog”. Before Coronavirus put a stop to those sort of shenanigans, Juliet was starting to preview a brand new show, “Found” in which she talks about how she “went to India to discover my Iraqi-Jewish roots and unleashed family feuds, bad gurus, smug sex therapists and furious monkeys. I fell out with my travel companion and I nearly died (twice).” Like our very own Rachel Creeger, Juliet is part of the rotating cast for Sajeela Kershi’s award winning show “Immigrant Diaries”.
