A THIRD elder at Jewish Care Victoria’s residential home in Windsor has tested positive to COVID-19, bringing the number of cases at the facility to four.

Two cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed on Monday in an elder and in a staff member. On Tuesday, Jewish Care said an additional two residents were diagnosed and “one other elder has symptoms that we are monitoring”.

“No new elders have been noted to have shown signs or symptoms during the day and that the four elders are well,” the organisation said.

“The additional positive result of an elder is one we were already monitoring prior to the lockdown. We may anticipate that the other elder we are monitoring will also return a positive result.

“Last night we tested the remaining 96 elders in the home and 74 staff have been tested today. We will provide further updates as soon as results start to come through.”

Jewish Care said “as soon as we became aware of the positive test result all ‘houses’ were placed into full lockdown”.

Meanwhile, the staff member who tested positive last worked at the facility on Sunday, July 26 and is now in quarantine at their home. Contact tracing is being undertaken.

“Our thoughts are clearly with the elder and staff member who have tested positive and we wish them both a speedy recovery,” Jewish Care said yesterday.

“This news will be distressing for our elders, their families and our staff. Jewish Care has deployed appropriate senior leadership and additional resources to the home to assist during this time.”

It comes after a case of COVID-19 was diagnosed last week in a kitchen worker at Jewish Care’s Gary Smorgon House in Caulfield.

The individual, who is on the staff of Jewish Care catering contractor AFACorp, reportedly last worked at Gary Smorgon House on July 19, and Jewish Care reports that no close contacts have been identified among Jewish Care elders or staff.

Kitchen staff identified as close contacts have been contacted and quarantined.
