A SUPERB 10-goal haul by forward Jordan Cohen earned him Best on Ground for AJAX’s senior men’s premier C side at Gary Smorgon Oval last Saturday, in their 89-point VAFA round 17 win over Oakleigh.

The Jackas started slowly, and trailed by two points after the first quarter, but fired in the second quarter, booting seven goals, including four by Cohen, to take full control.

Ruckman Jake Wrobel’s strong showing provided the AJAX midfield, led by skipper Nick Lewis, with plentiful supply in the second half.

The goals kept coming for Cohen, and fellow forwards Brandon Efron, who finished with four of his own, and Corey Zielinski (2), while midfielder Maor Chrapot also kicked two majors when moved into attack in the final term.

Toby Sheezel was a livewire around the ground, and kicked a goal too, while AJAX’s defenders, including Toby Lipton, Noah Webb and Charles Hamilton, were particularly effective, repelling numerous Oakleigh attacks.

Speaking after the game, Cohen played down his huge goal haul, preferring to thank his teammates who worked hard to supply him with good looks at goal all afternoon.

The AJAX seniors will travel to Old Carey this Saturday for the last regular season round, in a top of the table clash ahead of the finals.

The Jackas’ reserves enjoyed an 82-point win over Oakleigh to rise to equal first with Parkdale on competition points, but second on percentages.

Daniel Cohen booted five majors, Noah Spitz four, and Oscar Black three, in the 18.24 (132) to 8.2 (50) win, while Natan Cowan was Best on Ground.

With a top-two spot secured, the AJAX reserves will take on third-placed Old Carey this Saturday, in what should be perfect preparation for their finals campaign.
