Junior athletics team for Maccabiah bond at camp

Members of Australia's junior athletics team for the 2022 Maccabiah Games training in Melbourne last weekend.

The Australian junior athletics team for this July’s Maccabiah Games in Israel – comprised of teenage Jewish athletes from Sydney and Melbourne – undertook an important whole-squad training and information-sharing camp in Melbourne last weekend.

Accompanied by team manager Bronwyn Elbourne, the squad’s head coach David Brock organised for several experienced track and field coaches to work with the group across the two-day sessions.

Eleven of the 12 squad members participated, with only Sydney’s Joseph Rabinowitz, who is currently in Israel, unable to attend.

Three squad members hold national rankings for their age groups in at least one track and field event – Sydney’s Tali Baltineshter (U17 girls’ javelin), Sydney’s Zac Urbach (U18 boys’ 200m) and Melbourne’s Emma de Jong (U18 girls’ 1500m).

Other NSW members of the squad are Brodie Elbourne and Shira Gottlieb, while fellow squad members from Victoria – including a core of Maccabi Athletics Club members – are Skye Edelstein, Ethan Weiss, Gideon Datt, Adam Benson, Jayden Donner and Asher Grodski.

The coaches described the camp as a valuable team-building opportunity to further prepare the squad for the Maccabiah Games.
