Junior cricketers fall just short

THE Maccabi Junior Cricket Club came agonisingly close to its first premiership in the South Eastern Junior Cricket Association in decades, when the under-10 side was beaten by three wickets in a close encounter at Heffron Park.
The Eastern Suburbs Junior Mighty Maroons proved too good in the end, recording their third consecutive premiership win.
The side batted first and registered 8-76 from 25 overs.
But Maccabi was unable to defend its total, not helped by nine wides, nine no-balls and three byes, with the Mighty Maroons passing their target with three wickets to spare.
Jesse Berman was the star with the bat, while Jake Ziman was the pick of the bowlers and Daniel Solsky took what was clearly the side’s best catch of the season.
“[I’m] incredibly proud of the boys and they really showed tremendous spirit all season,” coach Brett Corrick said.
“Let’s not forget some of these boys are only eight and nine playing against older kids.
“There is still room to improve and we intend to give them a real shake next season,” Corrick said.
