Kalman Bloch OAM.
Kalman Bloch OAM.

Kalman Bloch’s motto has always been, “Service is the rent you pay for your room here on earth”.

He has never wavered from that belief, and helped thousands of people in communities in need – in Australia and overseas – through his 56 years of active membership of Lions Clubs.

For his community service – particularly for the Lions Club of Bondi, of which he is a life member and has served as president, secretary and more – Bloch has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

Bloch still attends monthly Lions Club meetings and is an enthusiastic Lions cake drive volunteer, averaging 3000 cake sales a year.

Over many years, he has collected second-hand glasses for people in Africa, raised funds for equipment for the Prince of Wales Eye Clinic, provided lunches and school fees for disadvantaged local kids, hosted annual Lions Youth of the Year public speaking events, and much more.

And for two decades, his pride and joy was being editor of the Lions Bulletin newsletter.

Bloch’s significant service earned him numerous awards from the Lions Club, including the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship by Lions International in 1988 and 1989, the President’s International Award for outstanding leadership in 1996, and the 50-year Monarch Certificate from Lions Clubs Australia.

Bloch and Heather, his much-loved wife who passed away in 2020, travelled to 27 Lions International conferences around the globe together.

Their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are enormously proud of Bloch’s recognition with an OAM, and look forward to the investiture at Government House.
