The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies “was privileged” to host Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper last week to discuss a range of new laws in NSW.

Kamper met with NSW JBD president David Ossip and was also grateful to be presented with a copy of Eddie Jaku’s book, The Happiest Man on Earth.

“Good to catch up with David Ossip, president of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies to discuss our new laws banning religious vilification in New South Wales,” Kamper posted on his social media accounts.

“I was moved to receive the biography of Eddie Jaku – a Holocaust survivor and volunteer at the Sydney Jewish Museum. Eddie passed away in 2021, but if everyone followed his example of meeting hatred with forgiveness, we wouldn’t need to pass laws like this.”

The amendment to the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 makes it unlawful to, “by a public act, incite hatred towards, serious contempt for, or severe ridicule of, a person or group of persons, because of their religious belief, affiliation or activity”.

A “public act” includes any form of communication to the public, verbal and non-verbal.

Following the meeting with Kamper, Ossip said, “We look forward to continuing to work together for all communities across NSW.”
