JUNIOR sailor Jay Karney produced a stellar performance at the recent Australian National Optimist Sailing Regatta in Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, which saw him finish in the top 35 placings and earn a spot on the Australian Optimist sailing team for 2014.

Coming up against more than 340 sailors from seven countries at the International Sailing Federation event for competitors under 16, Karney managed to qualify for the gold fleet category.

The Sydneysider vastly improved on his position of 106th last year and was awarded the Peter Gilmour Trophy for the most improved sailor.

“Jay got some top results, he’s had a massive improvement,” Karney’s father Andre told The AJN.

“At these events you have to try to be as consistent as possible, try to tackle strategy, tactics, your competitors and the elements, and he did his best ever.”

As one of the top 25 Australian competitors, he will now compete for the green and gold at regattas and training camps around the world, including events in New Zealand, Singapore and Ireland.

“There will be three main events and he’s beside himself to be able to go to all three,” Andre said.

“There’s the New Zealand nationals in April, then the Singapore nationals in June and the European regatta in Ireland in June, which is probably the highest Optimist event before the worlds.”
