LAWN BOWLS

Bowls carnival to follow Maccabiah

WHILE lockdowns and travel restrictions caused the popular Maccabi national lawn bowls carnival to be cancelled for the last two years, there is better news on that front for 2022.

Following Zoom meetings held between Maccabi lawns bowls officials from NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia last week, plus management at the usual venue for the event – Mermaid Beach Bowling Club on the Gold Coast – the organising committee confirmed that the 2022 Maccabi Lawn Bowls carnival is scheduled to go ahead.

It will take place from July 31 to August 5 at Mermaid Beach, according to the Maccabi NSW Lawn Bowls Guild, which will provide further details as they become available.

That’s one week after the completion of this year’s Maccabiah Games in Israel, for which the Australian lawn bowls men’s squad was recently ratified.

The selected squad is: Brandon Conway, Phil Filler, Pepe Glick, Peter Grunfeld, Phil Joel, Rod Silver (from NSW); Alan Messer, Giora Pomerantz (Victoria); Mike Zusman (WA); and Garry Benveniste (SA).

TENPIN

Natai nails it

IT’S only three rounds into the new Maccabi NSW Tenpin Monday night league at Manhattan Bowl, but the standard across the 18 teams is excellent, and the results very even.

Competition leaders Unknown, and second placed Oldies, were both beaten on February 14, by Bubba Zaida and Ring of Fire respectively, and third-placed Manis Manis also lost, to the seventh-placed Highland Warriors.

The highlight of the round, however, was Natai Hanouka, from the suitably named Mighty Underdogs, scoring 264 in one game – the top score so far – in their upset victory over Rolling Stones.

Hanouka was on an absolute roll, scoring 202 and 223 in his other games.

Round 4 will be held tonight (February 21).

SWIMMING

Mark your diary

The 72nd Speedo NSW Jewish Swimming Championship, hosted by Maccabi NSW Swimming Club, will be held on Sunday, February 27 at the Des Renford Aquatic Centre at 12pm, for a 12.30 start.

It promises to be a fun, friendly, yet competitive meet for Jewish swimmers aged from as young as five, right through to juniors age divisions and the highlight of the event, the open age male and female 100m freestyle races.

There will be some great raffle prizes on offer on the day, including spa and restaurant vouchers, and one night’s stay at a Meriton hotel.
