This dedicated, enthusiastic and experienced team is working together to provide an environment that allows Australia’s 500-plus athletes to be safe, achieve outstanding results and enjoy an experience of a lifetime in Israel, from the Games pre-camp from July 7 in Netanya, to the Games themselves in Jerusalem, Netanya and Haifa, from July 12-26.

Giorgi goes her furthest at French Open

Jewish Italian player Camila Giorgi reached the fourth round of the 2022 French Open in Paris earlier this week – the furthest she has gone in that major in her career.

The big-hitting 28th seed beat Zhang Shuai in three sets, Yulia Putintseva in straight sets and then upset the seventh seed Aryna Sabalenka in a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory.

But she bowed out on Monday night (Australian time), when a high error count cost her dearly against 20th seed Daria Kasatkina, who coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 win.

The best result out of the Jewish men at Roland Garros this time was Argentine Diego Schwartzman, who bowed out in the third round in straight sets to Novak Djokovic.

Kapler’s US national anthem protest

In mid-2020, Gabe Kapler, in his first season as manager of the San Francisco Giants, joined other high-profile sport figures in taking a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality.

Two years on, Kapler has announced he will not take the field at all for the anthem, out of broad dismay over the United States’ direction, spurred by the mass murder of 19 children at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

“When I was the same age as the children in Uvalde, my father taught me to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance when I believed my country was representing its people well, or to protest and stay seated when it wasn’t,” Kapler wrote on his blog. “I don’t believe it is representing us well right now.”

Kapler, a former coach for Team Israel, pledged to reassess his protest day by day, and did join his team for the anthem on Memorial Day last Monday, out of respect for America’s fallen soldiers.

Both teams deserved to qualify for the final, which was a high quality game.

Well done, too, to Barbara Shur and Bernard Fridman, for representing Double Bay at the 2022 State Senior Pairs tournament at Ettalong.

It is hoped this popular tournament will become an annual event.

Maccabi Lawn Bowls’ next event will be an open pairs tournament on June 26 at Double Bay Bowling Club.

While they’ve had a tough first season together, they have stuck to their guns, remained positive, and were rewarded last round with their first win.
