What a round of men’s Premier B first grade footy it was, in so many ways, for AJAX last Saturday.

In just their second home game at Albert Park all season – and just before an upcoming double bye – the Jackas maintained their top-four position with a huge 11.16 (82) to 6.7 (43) win over Old Carey – their second straight win.

To top it off, forward Jake Lew scored three goals, but it was the second one that was a real gem, because it was his 500th goal for the club – a truly remarkable achievement.

He is only the second AJAX player ever to reach that milestone.

Kicking into the breeze early, and relishing that challenge, the Jackas were fired up.

In his senior debut, 16-year-old Nick Pike began lively up forward, showcasing his agility and skill, and the AJAX backline was reliable as ever, keeping Old Carey to one first-quarter goal.

Coach Adam Andrews urged his side to play smart footy to utilise the second quarter wind advantage, and they did – building a 26-point lead, and they kept up their scoring rate until the final siren to win by 39.

Next up, the Jackas travel to fifth-placed Fitzroy on July 16.

AJAX’s VAFA division 2 women’s team were also on the winner’s list at their home ground last Saturday, thrashing Power House 7.6 (48) to 2.0 (12), to return to the top four.

The Jackettes’ tall forward Mia Zielinski – who turns 17 in a few weeks – showed why she is a top NAB League Girls player for Sandringham.

Remarkably, she scored all seven of the Jackettes’ goals, including an incredible dribble goal from the boundary.

Also having strong games were Shannon Osrin with some big hit-outs to advantage, defender Justine Gabriel who was almost impassable, and midfielders Julia Caplan and Jessica Shustin.

The Jackettes will host rivals Glen Eira this Saturday from 11.40am at Gary Smorgon Oval, before a two-week break.

AFL draft selection prospect Harry Sheezel impressed for Vic Metro in their NAB AFL U18 National Championship series win over The Allies in Blacktown, Sydney, on June 25.

The 17-year-old Mount Scopus student, former AJAX junior, and current Sandringham NAB League Boys’ forward booted four goals from 16 disposals in an attacking role in the 16.10 (106) to 14.6 (90) win.

Showing agility, skill, speed and creativity, Sheezel was opportunistic with his chances, and was the most effective forward on the field.

Vic Metro’s next match in the series will be this Saturday from 12.20pm against Western Australia at Ikon Park, followed by a July 17 clash with South Australia in Geelong.
