Only one out of Maccabi-AJAX Cricket Club’s four men’s teams had a win in round 10 of the Mercantile Cricket Association season last Sunday, but it was a win that kept the club in first position in Sunday A Grade.

The Maccabi-AJAX First XI faced 6th-placed Sunrise at Gary Smorgon Oval, and coasted to a 4-wicket win, largely thanks to brilliant bowling.

Batting first, Sunrise were dismissed for just 94 in 38.5 overs, as they struggled to find any answers against Maccabi’s in-form bowling unit.

The chief wicket-takers were Mark Soffer (3/23), Aaron Fetter (3/10) and Bailey Melzak (2/5).

Although they lost more wickets than they would have liked in the chase, Maccabi-AJAX reached 6/95 in 31 overs, with a handy 28 not out by Fetter proving crucial in the end.

This Sunday, in the fourth last round of the regular season, the Maccabi First XI will have a tougher challenge when they travel to play second-placed Carnegie.

In B grade, the second-placed Melbourne Ramblers proved too good for Maccabi-AJAX last Sunday, scoring 9/193 before bowling out Maccabi for 101.

Best for the Maccabi-AJAX Second XI were bowler Coby Feibel (4/29) and batsmen Brett Jacobs and Eytan Epstein (21 runs each).

They dropped a place to 7th on the 10-team ladder, but are only 6 points outside of the top 4.

The Jewish club is coming 6th out of 8 teams in C South grade, after a 32-run loss to 3rd-placed Burnley CYMS. The positive from that match was Gilad Meyerowitz top-scoring with 39 runs.

And Maccabi-AJAX’s development team had a narrow loss versus second-placed Thornbury, making 8/155 in their allotted 40 overs in reply to 10/175.

Jesse Onas took 3/23, and then scored 38 runs off 44 balls, to be Maccabi’s player of the match.
