THE Maccabi AJAX First XI had a dominant first day in its match against Sacred Heart, completely overpowering its opposition with both bat and ball.

Sacred Heart elected to bat first at Fawkner Park, but were soon regretting the decision.

JJ Zimmet and David Fayman removed the opposition openers, before the pair struck three more times to have the home side five wickets down by the first drinks break.

Simon Morawetz (3-5) then entered the attack and swept up the tail, with Sacred Heart’s final wicket falling with the score on 49.

Maccabi suffered a nervous start as both opening batsmen were dismissed with the score on 15.

However, Mark Soffer (62no) and Josh Sacks (55no) then established a strong partnership that saw both batsmen outscore the opposition’s total.

The pair piled on 120 runs before skipper Julien Wiener declared at 2-135, leaving the Sacred Heart openers seven nervous overs to navigate. At the close of play, the home side was 0-8 with plenty of work to do next week.

The Second XI has a big chase on it hands, after Monash University Gryphons compiled 9-259 from its 75 overs.

Young opener Adam Klein (5-43) bowled with pace and movement on his way to his first senior five-wicket haul; however, the Gryphons still managed to notch up a healthy total.

The Third XI lost its one-day match by six wickets to the Reds, after initially having a promising start to the day.

The Howard and Ben Machlin opening partnership contributed 49 runs before the Thirds suffered a mini-collapse that left them reeling at 3-57.

Gideon Gelbart (25) and Paul Litinsky (16) then added 35 runs, but the opposition swept through the lower order to dismiss Maccabi for 119.

The Reds were cruising at 1-82, before a flurry of wickets to Litinsky (3-24) gave the Thirds a sniff of an unlikely victory, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the defeat.

The Fourths finished the weekend on a high with a four-wicket win over Canterbury.

Laurie Shneider (2-12) got Maccabi off to a flyer claiming both openers, while Ian Jones (4-15) ripped through the middle order.

Yossi Herbst (3-19) then ensured Canterbury would be sent packing for 117, giving Maccabi a big chance at victory. Several players then starred with the bat, as the Fourths reeled in the total with plenty of wickets and overs to spare.

The Firsts continue their match against Sacred Heart at 1pm on Saturday at Cordner Oval, Fawkner Park (Melway: 2L D7).
