RAIN last Sunday afternoon washed out three of the four Maccabi-AJAX men’s teams games in round six of the Mercantile Cricket Association season, but the game that did produce a result was a very welcome one for the Jewish club’s Third XI.

This young team had a confidence-boosting win – an 81-run thrashing of Monash Uni – which moved them up from 7th place to equal 5th on the C south grade ladder.

Maccabi-AJAX set a decent total of 127 for the loss of 7 wickets in its allotted 45 overs.

Ari Fell top-scored with 41 runs off 68 balls, and was the glue in solid partnerships with Arik Singer (22 runs) and then Jeremy Hoppe (27).

Knowing that rain could fall anytime, the Maccabi bowlers were hungry for wickets and they delivered fast, getting their opponents all out for just 46 in 27.4 overs.

Gilad Lowinger took 4/7 in a 9-over spell that included 5 maidens, and Zak Bierenkrant (3/3), Jamie Hyams (2/4) and Dean Wainstain (1/15) were also superb.

The next round for all grades is on January 9, 2022.
